I think we can all agree that spiritual dry spells are the worst. It’s astounding how quickly they can happen. One second you're in church every Sunday, steadily doing your devotional, practicing a healthy prayer life with Christ. Then, the next thing you know you’re in a spiritual fog and feel as if you’re so far from Him that you can only see an outline of the God you used to be inseparable with. This separation from Our King causes us to feel guilty, anxious, and helpless. Sometimes we get so far from Him that it feels like there’s no getting back. However, it is during these times when we should turn our Bibles to the Parable of the Prodigal’s Son (Luke 15 11-32). It is through this parable that Jesus tells us that there is no such thing as straying "too far" in the eyes of God. While it seems so easy to turn back to Him, sometimes we get so stuck in these spiritual dry spells that they can start to feel like quick sand on the soul. To get through one we must first acknowledge how we got there in the first place. It happens to the best of us. School and extracurriculars and work and kids (if you have those) start to get crazy and we begin allowing them to occupy all of our time. One way to avoid falling into one of these dry spells is to form a consistent prayer and faith life. One that is difficult to break when a last minute meeting gets thrown into your schedule. Another way, and in my opinion the best way, is to surround yourself with people who share your faith and will hold you accountable on your journey to Heaven. Our doubts, failings, and spiritual dry spells will never be strong enough to keep us away from Him. Even when we feel like we can only see His outline, He sees every part of us. If we all had a perfect relationship with God what would be the point? We often realize we need Him the most when we feel like we can’t reach Him at all. He’s always carrying us, even when it feels like He’s miles away. He knows we’re not perfect, and He knows we never will be. That’s what is so amazing about His love. He made us knowing we would have these doubts and spiritual dry spells, but He created us anyway. God’s love is stronger than we will ever be able to comprehend. There will never be a spiritual dry spell too hard for us to get through, so long as we strive to live life by His grace through our faith.
