What To Do When Those “What Ifs” Kick In

The “what ifs” of life are the hardest to fight off. For me, these things tend to creep in at night. I lay down after a long day, my head on the pillow, eyes closed, ready for a nice sleep, then boom “what if this,” “but what if that,” fill my mind, and I’m left wide awake. Once these thoughts start to form it can be so hard to figure out how to get them to go away. One thing that helps me is taking some slow deep breaths. Then, I like to focus my mind on Him by repeating “I trust in You, Lord Jesus.” I also try to pray for others in order to distract from myself. Another thing I like to do is to put my mind somewhere else. I’ll imagine myself on the beach or laying in a large field, whatever may bring me comfort, and continue to take deep breaths. Now, sometimes these things won’t help the “what ifs” totally go away, but they will definitely at least help a little. Putting your mind towards something greater than yourself, in our case God, will help those “what-ifs” fade away.  And even if the “what ifs” do happen, He is still Good.

XOXO, MC
